Hi all, Another successful regatta for PHRC on the Barwon yesterday with 4 wins, 8 seconds, 2 thirds and only 3 crews failing to make a final. In brief, the following results were achieved... MA8+ Roland, Andrew, Pete L, Dave, Alex, Shane, Jeremy, Hatsy & Caitlin were a bit understrength in A grade and went down to a fast MRC crew by around 3 lengths. Missing 5 of our best eight through illness, injury and absenteeism, this was still a good performance. FB2- Nic and Alissa are still fine-tuning, but rowed strongly at both the start and over the final stages to finish 2nd by 4 lengths to another MRC crew. MD1x Pete B struggled with gear failure in this event - next time. MA4+ Alex, Andrew, Shane, Hatsy & Nic did exceptionally well here to run down a Ballarat Grammar crew in the last 25m to record the clubs first win of the day by 1 metre! MC4+ Roland, Angelo, Pete L, Dave & Tara won their heat comfortably but fell just short in the final, finishing a creditable second. FB8+ Virg, Sarah, Cindy, Jen, Jeanette, Vic, Chap and Kate overcame an extra 40kgs in the coxes seat to make it through the heat in a frankly shabby row, but once Alissa took over steering duties in the final, the girls turned in a very convincing performance to finish 2nd by 3/4 of a length to a strong MGS crew. MD2+ Pete L, Angelo & Nic overcame their fear of "the tub" and one of their opponents, but fell short of the pace to finish 2nd here. Some more work and better strategy will do wonders for these guys. FB4+ Virg, Jen, Cindy, Kate & Alissa were never headed in heat or final, taking a comfortable win in fine fashion. MC8+ Pete C, Adrian, Roland, Dave, Brendon, Mike, Jeremy, Andrew & Caitlin rowed beautifully to win their heat, but failed to reproduce in the final, a scrappy row not good enough to get close to a very strong MRC "C" grade eight. FA4+ Jeanette, Vic, Chap, Kate & Alissa were left behind early, trailing the field by over a length at halfway. Kate's new-found aggression found an outlet however, and the girls ran down both Mercs and MRC in the final 50m to finish a strong 2nd to BGS. FC4+ Felicity, Sarah, Cindy, Jen & Nic were unfortunate to run into the eventual winners in the heat here, going down by a canvas after a fast finish. The girls won their B final in a canter as their erstwhile opponents did the same in the A final. MA1x Shane was typically gritty in winning the A scull against two strong scullers from MRC and Barwon. Despite hooking a buoy causing him to lose an oar and the lead with 75m to go, Shane recovered both and took out the race by about 1/2 a length. MA2x In the absence of Bingles, Heath was convinced to step up into the A double with Shane and probably regretted it almost immediately with a massive crab on the second stroke costing about 3-4 lengths. The guys fought back however, narrowly missing 2nd spot. FD2+ Felicity, Sarah & Alissa forgot all about their misgivings regarding 'the tub' as they leapt out to an early lead and were never headed, taking a massive win in their first effort at this boat. MD4+ Pete C, Adrian, Brendon, Mike & Tara ran into the fast heat and missed a spot in the A final, but went on to win the B final easily. They therefore missed the much anticipated showdown with Geoff, Brian, John O'Dowd, Pete B and Caitlin who finished 2nd in the other heat, making the A final where they came a creditable 3rd behind crews approximately 1/3 their age. MB8+ Roland, Angelo, Pete L, Dave, Alex, Andrew, Jeremy, Hatsy & Nicole had a seriously impressive race here. Losing a length over the first 100m, the guys stuck to their guns and never let the strong Corio crew get away, eventually closing to within 1/2 a length by the close. Well done to all, this was a very strong performance, particularly as we were missing several of our best oarspeople, both men and women. Bodes well for the depth of the club. I'd like to thank Heath for driving the boats yet again, taking a massive load off my shoulders. Additionally, many thanks to Doug McManamny, who gave up his afternoon to come down to Geelong and act as our Boat Race Official. Without someone to do this important job, our club is not allowed to compete at regattas. Please let Doug know you appreciate his efforts which enable you to race, and give some thought to volunteering yourself at some point in the future. See you all at training. Cheers, Drew |
