Hi all, Another fun-filled Easter weekend is over finally. Results were again excellent, with 9 wins at Mildura on Saturday, followed by 10 wins at Wentworth on Sunday. Strong competition from Melbourne RC at Mildura saw us lose a number of races by extremely narrow margins, for example, all 3 men's eights were lost by a total margin of less than 1/2 a length! Unfortunately, a number of clubs chose not to compete at Wentworth, so of necessity, a couple of events became PHRC intraclub duels, resulting in some great tough racing and close results. For those interested, a brief summary follows... Mildura Regatta FC2x Jeanette, Kate A win in the heat, progression to the A final and a 3rd placing in a big field. FD2x Chap, Jen Also made the A final, but managed a 2nd placing. Well done for first effort in this combo. MO8+ Hatsy, Drew, Bingles, Alex, Mal, Nathan, Ryan, David (Caitlin) MRC and PHRC burned off the Essendon crew early and dueled to the line. We went down by less than a canvas. FB2- Alissa, Nic Up against their usual nemeses, the girls went down by 3 lengths in neutral conditions, bring on the tail-wind! MO4+ Drew, Hatsy, Alex, Bingles (Nic) A match-race against MRC again, and again we lost by the smallest of margins, about 2 feet this time. MC4+ Phil, Nathan, Jon, David (Tara) Not a great row from the guys, finishing a distant 2nd. FB4+ #1 Nic, Cindy, Elle, Alissa (Caitlin) #2 Jeanette, Kate, Julia, Greer (Tara) PHRC intraclub duel here. Tight fought all the way with the #1 crew scoring by about 1/4 of a length after great wind-ups from both crews. MD2+ Jon, Heath (Tara) Great win for the pair here causing some talk about where the weak link earlier in the season may have been... FD4x+ Alissa, Jen, Elle, Greer (Caitlin) Strong win here for the girls at only their second outing as a crew. MM8+ Hatsy, Drew, Bingles, Alex, Mal, Jeff, Jon, Heath (Nic) Giving away a 9 second handicap, we just ran down the strong Mildura D crew about 100m from the line, going on to win by about 2 lengths. MO1x Bingles Seriously impressive performance from Nicholas here, cruising through his heat, then holding off some excellent scullers in the final to score a top notch win. XO8+ Hatsy, Drew, Kate, Alex, Bingles, Jeanette, Jen, Chap (Nic) Disappointingly, Rowing Victoria insisted that this event be split into 2 divisions, so the much anticipated clash between PHRC and MRC did not eventuate as the crews fell into separate divisions. No changes were allowed, hence MRC won their divison comfortably, as did we, defeating the MRC #2 crew by around 3 lengths. FO8+ Kate, Chap, Greer, Jeanette, Jen, Cindy, Nic, Alissa (Caitlin) In what was some revenge for the men's eights, the girls scored here by about 1 foot over MRC in the premier women's event of the day. Great race and high excitement over the last 150m as our crew ran down a 1/2 length deficit to hit the lead on the last stroke. MO4x+ Bingles, Hatsy, Drew, Ryan (Tara) Some good clean sculling here was enough to despose of the competition, Essendon hanging on the longest, but PHRC ran out winners by around 2 lengths. MC8+ Mal, Alex, Jon, Nathan, Phil, David, Jeff, Heath (Lynda) Another of our narrow eight losses, this one by about 4 feet or so. Great performance by the guys. FO4+ Kate, Chap, Jen, Jeanette (Alissa) Backing up straight away after the open eight, our girls didn't quite have the fuel to go with the fresh MRC crew, down by about 3 lengths. FC4+ Nic, Cindy, Elle, Julia (Tara) Despite a strong row, the girls just missed out here, 2nd to a strong Albert Park crew. MB4+ Alex, Mal, Nathan, Phil (Caitlin) Great win here in a charge to the line, our boys getting up by about a canvas. Top job in the stroke seat by Alex. FO2- Chap, Kate At the end of a long day, the girls weren't quite up to the MUBC/Mercs combo, getting run down in the home straight to finish 2nd by about 1 length. FD2+ Elle, Julia (Alissa) The work Jules and Elle have put in over the last few weeks was obvious here as they fought hard, finishing a strong 2nd. MB8+ Hatsy, Drew, Mal, Nathan, Ryan, David, Jon, Jeff (Nic) Unable to reverse the trend of the day, we lost another eight race to MRC, this time by a canvas. MM2x Bingles, Matt Sentry (Ess) Despite a strong row, the guys were unable to bridge the 25 second handicap, finishing second. Wentworth Regatta FC2x Jeanette, Kate With the race reduced to first and final, the girls finished a creditable 2nd. FD2x Chap, Jen The girls had the identical result from the day before, through to the A final, then 2nd place. MO4+ #1 Drew, Hatsy, Nathan, Mal (Nic) #2 Bingles, Alex, Ryan, David (Alissa) The first of several intraclub matchraces on the day, the #2 crew took an early lead, but their Saturday night caught up with them by the time the bridge was reached at 600m, the #1 crew easing away for a win buy 1.5 lengths. MC4+ Jon, Jeff, Phil, Heath (Caitlin) A couple of crew changes and a big improvement, the guys having a good win here. FB4+ #1 Nic, Cindy, Elle, Alissa (Caitlin) #2 Jeanette, Kate, Julia, Greer (Tara) The crews were stroke for stroke over the first half of the race, then a clash of oars caused the #2 crew to lose a length. It's still a point of debate who caused the clash, however the #1 crew weren't about to give up the advantage, going on to win by that length. The umpire's flag was white... MD2+ Jon, Heath (Tara) Confirmed their dominance with another strong win here. Adrian, you have some work to do! FD4x+ Alissa, Jen, Elle, Greer (Caitlin) The girls repeated the dose from the day before, running away with another good win. MM8+ Hatsy, Drew, Bingles, Alex, Mal, Jeff, Jon, Heath (Lynda) Giving away 14 seconds to Mildura over the 1000m, the start went something like this... Mildura, GO, (insert pause of around 10 strokes for Mildura), then 6...7...8...Wentworth...GO... 9...10...11.......12.......13.........Power
House.............GO. Needless to say, the water was quite calm when we eventually took off, and it remained pretty calm for the rest of the race. We didn't get near them. MO1x Bingles Too much beer and not enough sleep. Couldn't repeat Saturday's heroics. Well beaten. XO8+ Hatsy, Drew, Kate, David, Phil, Cindy, Jen, Chap (Nic) In a full field, we ran out easy winners by around 8 lengths. FC1x Jeanette Whipped up by the crowd over the last 200m, Jeanette picked up around 4 lengths in that distance, to narrowly miss the win, second by a length. MC2x Ryan, Jeff Unfortunately scratching reduced this to a row-over for the guys, who nonetheless looked impressive. MB2- Alex, Mal Racing against a Wentworth crew who boated in a coxed racing pair (minus the cox), the guys did enough for the expected win. FC4+ Nic, Cindy, Elle, Julia (Alissa) Initially the girls went down to Albert Park by 1 length. As it happened however, APSM were competing in a racing shell, not the required regulation boat. Hence the race was ours by disqualification. To their credit however, our girls agreed to a re-row in equal boats at the end of the day. Coming as it did immediately after the D pair, this was not ideal for Julia and Elle, and the margin was identical to the first race. The sportsmanship shown by the crew was noted by APSM and RV officials and does credit to the crew and the club. Well done. MB4+ #1 Drew, Mal, Nathan, Ryan (Caitlin) #2 Hatsy, Alex, Phil, David (Tara) The third PHRC matchrace of the day. In a virtual repeat of the Open 4 earlier in the day, the #2 crew took an early lead, but was unable to sustain the pace, with the #1 crew pegging back gradually. Some excellent coxing by Caitlin who called the efforts right on the nose for maximum effect. Eventual margin about 1.5 lengths. FO2- #1 Chap, Kate #2 Alissa, Nic Again an all PHRC affair, with the crews again evenly matched. This time, the #2 boat displayed some tight, clean rowing over the last 200m to come from behind and score a win by 1/2 a length as their taller, heavier opponents struggled with cohesion under pressure. FD2+ Elle, Julia (Nic) Another great performance here by Jules and Elle, just missing out again, but generating the 'speed bow-wave' on the Lewis over the last 150m. MD4+ #1 Jon, Nathan, Ryan, David (Tara) #2 Mal, Jeff, Phil, Heath (Caitlin) A Wentworth crew rounded out the field, but it may as well have been another PHRC matchrace, with both PHRC crews outstripping the competition easily. Ultimately it was the #1 crew who perfomed better over the 2nd half, running out winners by about 1.5 lengths. Whew! That's it. The end of the season proper. Many thanks to Heath for towing the boats there and back - a huge effort that is much appreciated. Also thanks to Lynda, Greer, Tara and Nathan for performing BRO duties across the weekend. Thanks to Nicole for organising camping (we are running out of places to stay!) and to Kate, Alissa and Hatsy for the frivolities of Kangaroo Court. Well done to all rowers and coxes, hope to see you all involved come next season. Cheers, Drew P.S. As many will know, the club single scull (the Mark Baxter) was broken in half on the trip home as the result of a broken tie-down. This is an unusual and infrequent occurrence, is no-one's fault and is not a disaster. The boat is insured, the claim is underway and the boat will be repaired/replaced in due course. |
