Hi all,

The club put together another solid performance on Saturday at the
Footscray regatta.  We had 7 athletes making their first appearance
for the club, plus the usual suspects also contributing.  We boated 20
crews, how they fared follows...

FD4+
Felicity, Elle, Julia, Rosie (Alissa)
The training is paying off for the 'beginners' as they rowed to a
strong second place in the heat, then narrowly missed the win in the B
final - I sense good things in Mildura...

MD1x
Pete Benson
Pete's woes in the single continue...

MC4+ #1
Heath, Angelo, Roland, Jon B (Lynda/Elle)
The guys struggled through the heat into third place, then had a much
improved row to finish second in the B final.

MC4+ #2
Pete W, John D, Jeff, Adrian (Rosie)
A good heat row into second place unfortunately didn't translate into
the B final, where the crew finished off the pace in 3rd place.

FD4x+
Felicity, Elle, Greer, Alissa (Caitlin)
This was the 'oh so close' event of the day.  The girls lost their
heat by a metre, then went down in the B final by the proverbial
bowball.

MD2+
Heath, Adrian (Tara)
The boys surprised themselves here with a solid second in the heat
then powering clear to win the B final - Easter beckons...

MA4+
#1 Alex, Phil, Shane, Bingles (Tara)
#2 Mal, Nathan, Hatsy, Drew (Caitlin)
An all Power House affair in the A four with an early error by the #2
crew giving the early break to the #1 boat.  As you would hope, they
didn't waste the opportunity and ran out winners by around 2 lengths.

MD8+
Jeff, Pete B, Pete W, Nathan, Heath, Adrian, Roland, Jon B (Lynda)
A ding-dong battle all the way down the course in what was a genuinely
good performance from our guys saw them just edged out on the line by
around 1/3 of a length.  Great effort.

MA2-
#1 Drew, Bingles
#2 Hatsy, Shane
Again an all PHRC match-race as the depth of A grade rowing continues
to be sadly exposed.  Both crews went stroke for stroke over the first
half, before a great rhythm change and acceleration from the #2 boat
was met with nought but a pathetic whimper from the #1 crew.  Result a
forgone conclusion from there.  About 2 lengths, maybe 3, don't know,
couldn't see, didn't want to look...

MC8+
Jeff, John D, Roland, Jon B, Nathan, Angelo, Alex, Mal (Tara)
A great head row saw an easy win over Richmond and progression to the
A final.  The Footscray crew jumped out of the blocks and surprised
our guys who perhaps weren't quite so prepared for this.  As a result,
the row wasn't as polished as the heat, and Footscray held on to win
by a length.  A good lesson learned - don't panic if you lose the
start!

FC4+
Julia, Greer, Cindy, Elle (Alissa)
A terrible panicky row in the heat resulted in a distant second place
and relegation to the B final.  Fortunately, a massive turn-around in
form saw a vastly improved row in the heat and a loss by a canvas.
Another good lesson learned.

MA1x
Shane
A good win in the heat brought Shane up against the experienced Scott
Riddell of Essendon in the final.  Despite an amazing finishing
sprint, Shane was hampered by his heavy program up til then, and
didn't quite have the legs to get past Scott.  Down by 1/2 a length.

MB4+ #1
Jeff, Nathan, Mal, Alex (Tara)
A comfortable heat win booked this crew a spot in the A final where
they came up against some very competent schoolboys.  Again, the crew
finished strongly, but not fast enough, going down by about a length.

MB4+ #2
David, Angelo, Roland, Jon B (Caitlin)
Apparently an improvement over their training sessions, but not quite
quick enough, the guys were run out in the heats with a 3rd place.

FD2+
Felicity, Rosie (Alissa)
With Sarah departing to the northern hemisphere, Felicity needed a new
partner in pain, and Rosie stepped up to the plate.  A surprise
row-over in the heat gave automatic progression to the final, where
the girls held off a determined Whygunya crew to take the win.  Well
done.

MD4+
Pete W, John D, Heath, Pete B (Lynda)
Third place in the heat was maybe a little disappointing, but the guys
redeemed themselves beautifully in winning the C final.

MA4x+
Shane, Drew, Hatsy, Bingles (Caitlin)
Down 1/4 of a length off the start, the crew worked well to get clear
water on the Essendon boat when a crab from the hack in 2 seat
threatened to bring it all undone.  Fortunately, recovery was rapid,
and we held on for the win.

MA2x
Shane, Bingles
Tired legs and a fiesty (and seriously quick) pair of brothers from
Nagambie were the undoing of the hitherto unbeaten PHRC duo here.  Our
boys never gave up, but were pipped by half a length when the bell
rang.

So, four wins and numerous placings was a solid result.  Special
mention to Jeff Hills and Heath Stubbs, both of whom laboured through
7 races on a hot and draining day.  Heath also towed the boats there
and back - thanks again Heath.  A few people showed their class once
again, Shane with 3 wins, Hatsy and Bingles with 2 each, the best
individual performers of the day.

Well done also to Phil who got his first win in his first race for the
club, and to Rosie, who also scored her first win.  I believe that the
MA4+ was also Tara's first coxing victory - excellent effort.  In
addition to Phil, 6 others (Elle, Julia, Nathan, David D, Jon B and
Lynda), also had their first hit out in the black, green and white
colors.  Congratulations and welcome.

Cheers, Drew

P.S.  Entries for the Easter regattas are due this Friday - please
