Following a big day of racing at Australian Henley, Power House Rowing Club came together on Saturday 21 February for our first official event with Breheny Breweries — an afternoon that blended rowing pride, community spirit and a generous splash of independent brewing history.
The celebration kicked off with James Breheny, who shared the remarkable story of his family’s brewing legacy. From the first Breheny brewery in 1864 to their modern revival as an independent beer brand, James spoke passionately about the importance of community connection, local clubs and independent distribution partners like IGA and Thirsty Camel in keeping the Breheny name thriving. With long-standing ties to Power House Rugby Club, the partnership already feels like a natural fit.
A huge thank‑you goes to everyone who helped bring the event to life — especially Linda O’Donnell, who cooked up an absolute feast of classic beer‑friendly favourites. Her prawns, sausage rolls and other crowd‑pleasers paired perfectly with the crisp Breheny beers, earning rave reviews from members.
The Breheny beers were such a hit that more than a few members left with their own take‑home supply, keen to keep enjoying the pale ale, stout and lager long after the afternoon wrapped up.
What started as a casual chat between club president Peter Leahy and James Breheny at Head of the Yarra has quickly grown into a partnership that feels genuinely aligned — grounded in shared values, a love of sport and a commitment to community.
Here’s to many more events together. Cheers to what’s ahead.
