Power House Shines at the 2025 Head of the Yarra
Held annually since 1957, the Head of the Yarra is one of the most prestigious rowing events in the Southern Hemisphere. Hosted by Hawthorn Rowing Club, this iconic 8.6 km time-trial winds from Melbourne’s CBD to Hawthorn, drawing over 250 crews from across Australia and overseas. As one of the world’s top three “Head” races - alongside the Head of the River (UK) and Head of the Charles (USA) - it’s a true test of endurance, teamwork, and tactical precision.
But it’s not just the rowers who face a challenge. Known as the “coxswains regatta", the Head of the Yarra demands expert steering through tight bends and unpredictable currents. The infamous ‘Big Bend’ corner has humbled many crews over the years, making steering prowess a celebrated part of the event. In 2025, Power House’s own Helen McManamny earned recognition as one of the top 50 coxswains in the field - an outstanding achievement in a race where steering is everything.
On the water, Power House delivered a powerful statement:
- Male Masters G8+ stormed to victory, claiming first place in their category.
- Mixed AC8+ secured a strong third-place finish, showcasing grit and cohesion.
- Mixed Masters D8+ also clinched third, rounding out a stellar day for the club.
These results reflect not only the athleticism of our crews but the depth of preparation, spirit, and club culture that drives Power House forward. Congratulations to all athletes, coaches, and supporters who made this regatta one to remember.
