As winter thaws and the mist lifts off Victoria’s rivers, the rowing head season begins - a stretch of long-distance regattas that test endurance, teamwork, and grit. Unlike sprint racing, head races are time trials over extended distances, often winding through scenic waterways and challenging crews to push beyond their limits.
The season unfolds across iconic waterways, with events like the Barwon Heads Regatta and Melbourne Head offering stunning backdrops and spirited competition. Crews of all ages and configurations - men’s, women’s, mixed - line up to chase personal bests, club pride, and the sheer thrill of racing against the clock. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a passionate novice, there’s a seat for you in this journey.
But the crown jewel? The legendary Head of the Yarra. Held in late November, this 8.6 km race from Hawthorn to Melbourne’s CBD is a bucket-list event for rowers nationwide. With over 250 crews, roaring bank-side supporters, the infamous 'big bend' bingles (IFYKYK) and the electric buzz of competition, it’s more than a race - it’s a rite of passage.
Here’s a snapshot of the season’s events (which include a number of fun regional events for those looking for a fun weekend away):
Power House Rowing Club is actively training for head season right now, with eights and sweep oar boats hitting the water 5.30am Thursday and Friday, and Erg conditioning sessions running every Wednesday at 6am. If you are a member and keen to get involved, remember to put your name down for training sessions and put your name on the Regattas you are interested in competing on in the Regatta spreadsheet.
Grab your oars, rally your crew, and train with purpose. The river is calling - and the Head of the Yarra awaits.
